France’s Ban of GM Corn Is Reversed by the EU

France’s ban of GM corn has been summarily reversed by the EU. The desire of the people and the information of real science are ignored.

Some readers may have noted that Gaia Health didn’t jump on the bandwagon of excitement over France’s ban of genetically modified (GM) corn. The reason is that today’s news was predictable. The European Union has reversed the ban.

In 2008, France banned the GM strain of corn, MON 810, after the people protested. A French court overturned that ban in 2011. However, France’s agricultural minister overturned the court’s ruling, based on his recognition that MON 810 holds the potential of harming the environment.

Now, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has ruled that France did not provide adequate evidence to prove that “there is no specific scientific evidence, in terms of risk to human and animal health or the environment”.

Notice the use of science to back the EFSA’s claims. This is not real science. It’s the pseudo science owned by corporations like Monsanto.

Notice also that the precautionary principle is ignored. Corporate-owned pseudo science is also used to evade the obvious need to first consider potential risks to humans and the environment.

Remember the excitement not long ago about Monsanto and BASF pulling out of Europe? As I explained in Monsanto and BASF Pull Out of Europe: Good News or Sleight of Hand?, it was nonsense, nothing more than maneuvering to go where development is easier. The moves have nothing to do with public sentiment.

The simple fact is that the EU is a dictatorship that is utterly unresponsive to the will of the people or the nations within it. The EU is a front for multinational corporations, as clearly demonstrated by its constitution. Not even the US has enshrined corporations with personhood in their constitution. It is, though, one of the primary tenets of the EU’s constitution.

Thus, the health of the people and the environment have become nothing more than resources to be fed into the corporate maws that have taken control.

This is what happens when corporations run rampant. Most of us turned our heads as corporations destroyed small nations. It provided us with real goodies, like cheap bananas and pineapples, cheaply manufactured goods of all sorts, and cheap oil. Now those corporations have grown so strong that they control the greatest nations in the world. That’s why it was completely predictable that the EU would ban France’s ban on GM corn.
