Ayn and Her Father

The tragic story of Ayn Van Dyck, an autistic girl who was stolen from her father by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) in British Columbia, Canada, has taken a tale for the worse. She was grabbed by MCFD with no real excuse given. You can read about it here. It’s been three months, and earlier this month Derek Hoare, Ayn’s father, found out where his daughter was being held.

A member of the support group that has sprung up on Facebook (requires Facebook membership), found where she was. Ayn was being held in a foster home without any apparent understanding of the needs of autistic children. Even worse, a teenage girl with her own problems was both watching her and administering her drugs! And she was being paid $15 an hour for it.

Derek reports:

The picture of the home which emerges is one more like a small business than that of a family. Ayn rarely gets out and is kept in a suite downstairs, medicated.

He discussed what was happening with the mother of the girl so inappropriately being used to babysit Ayn. She had placed her child voluntarily, and was quite upset at the situation. So, she immediately insisted that her daughter be moved from there.

Derek has only been told that the situation is “under investigation”. MCFD refuses to move her while it’s ongoing, and they say that they’ve “taken steps” to assure it doesn’t go on. Of course, they don’t say what steps.

It’s been two weeks, and Derek still knows nothing more about his daughter’s welfare, except that:

  • Ayn is being held by people who have no appreciation for Ayn’s needs.
  • Ayn is being drugged, when her family is completely against it and it was never needed before.
  • Ayn is miserable.
  • It will be months before she can go home again, and the damage that will be done to her in that time will be immense.

Can you imagine what it’s like to be Ayn’s father right now?

Thank you for writing this. We need all the attention we an get to bring Ayn home to Derek. This is such an appalling situation. I have known Derek and his family for years and he is a wonderful father.

He has been so devastated by all of this and the more I hear about what the system is doing the more I realize that we seem be losing more and more power over our lives every day.

Thank you so much for this blog entry to help tell the story. Also appreciate the links you added. This is day 107 and there have not been any real gains for Ayn. Hope you stay in touch and write some more!
