Profits: Poisoning People, Plants, and the Planet
As this holiday season arrives, I’m finding it difficult to get in a joyous mood—and honestly wonder how anyone can. Gaia, this great living globe of which we’re part and all life is dependent, is dying. The murderer is obvious: Us. You. Me. Our neighbors. Your country and mine. This slow torture unto death is being carried out on the altar of the almighty god, Profit.
The forests are disappearing, one tree after another slain on the altar of Profit.
Coral reefs are becoming skeletons. The song of whales is fast fading. Cod have collapsed. Dead zones expand. Oceans are overfished, acidified, and petroleum poisoned on the altar of Profit.
Topsoil blows into the maw of Profit. Great tracts of land are poisoned to prop up Profit.
Waterways are choked by Agribusiness, Big Pharma, and Big Chemical companies as they pay obeisance to their god Profit.
Whatever one’s religious views, this is the season to honor the Prince of Peace, not the Prints of Profit. The entire world is being suffocated by Profit’s footprints, and as they march onward, they promote profligate Profit.
