San Francisco Gives Toxic Waste to Citizens, Calls It Fertilizer

San Francisco is giving toxic waste to its citizens for free. Such a deal! The Center for Food Safety reports that sewage sludge loaded with toxic wastes is being passed off as compost in "compost giveaway events".

That's one way of getting rid of the stuff.

The sewage sludge contains industrial, commercial, hospital, and household wastes that have not been filtered out. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission claims that it's "non-hazardous and nontoxic" and is safe for use on "growing edible vegetables and fruits". They make this claim, though, without a single shred of evidence; they have not performed a single test.

The EPA found that nearly all sewage sludge samples contain 27 metals, 10 flame retardants, 12 pharmaceuticals, and high levels of endocrine disruptors. These have been linked with health problems when they're in sludge used as fertilizers.

Gaia Health would like to know how this differs from corporate distribution of toxic wastes to farmers in India by calling it fertlizer?
