Study Shows That Vitamin D Lowers Cardiovascular Disease Rates 77 Percent—A study presented at the American Heart Association's 2009 Scientific Sessions reports that Vitamin D significantly lowers death rates from cardiovascular disease. Of 27,000 people over age 50 with very low levels of Vitamin D are 77% more likely to die of heart disease and 78% more likely to die of strokes.

Medical Journal Ghostwriting Being Questioned on Capitol Hill—After the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that medical journals have routinely been publishing ghostwritten articles, Senator Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, became concerned. He has initiated an investigation by the Senate Finance Committee, on which he is the ranking Republican.

As Copenhagen Approaches, US Congress Tables Climate Bill, IPCC Chief Doubtful—With the UN's Copenhagen climate change conference just two weeks away, Democratic leaders in the US Senate have tabled discussion until, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, 'some time in the spring.'

Antarctica Measurably Shrinking from Ice Melt—Scientists have found that Antarctica's ice sheet has melted significantly since 2006. Losing an estimated 190 billion tons of ice a year, it's feared that the southern ice sheet may soon melt faster than Greenland's, with major implications in rising sea levels.

Drug Resistant Swine Flu Found in Both US and UK at Same Time—On the same day, the BBC and the Associated Press (AP) reported Tamiflu-resistant cases of swine flu in their countries. In the US, it's four North Carolina patients at Duke University Medical Center. In the UK, it's five patients at University Hospital in Wales.

Heavy Metals Damage DNA Without Crossing Cell Membrane—The journal Nature Nanotechnology reports that metal nanoparticles can affect cellular DNA without crossing the cell membrane. This may have significant implications for people concerned with heavy metal damage, such as mercury in autism.

Research: Pesticides Damage DNA. Agribusiness Still Claims No Link to Cancer—Farmers in the Punjab region have suffered from DNA damage that can lead to cancer as a result of pesticides, according to scientists from Patiala University located there.

Abuse in Childhood May Cause Early Aging—Childhood abuse not only makes life more difficult, it may also shorten it. As reported by the BBC, a Brown University team found that telomeres become shorter faster in people who reported having been abused as children.

Elderly Being Killed by Misuse of Antipsychotics—Expert review has documented that 180,000 elderly in care homes are given antipsychotic drugs, that the medication is not needed in 150,000 of them, and that 1,800 deaths are related to this misuse.

Nuclear Workers Have More Heart Disease, Probably Caused by Low Dose Radiation—The BBC reports that workers in nuclear plants have increased levels of heart disease related to long term low dosage radiation, according to epidemiological studies.

San Francisco Gives Toxic Waste to Citizens, Calls It Fertilizer—San Francisco is giving toxic waste to its citizens for free. Such a deal! The Center for Food Safety reports that sewage sludge loaded with toxic wastes is being passed off as compost in 'compost giveaway events'.
