Protestor Gets the Podium at Monsanto Shareholders Meeting (video)

NonsensoAdam Eidinger, coordinator of the Right to Know March for GMO Labeling, spoke in an official capacity at the Monsanto Shareholders Meeting in Ireland in January 2012. There was no option but to let him speak, as he and his group hold a share, which gives them the right. He introduced a resolution that “addresses serious risks associated with Monsanto’s GMO crops, toxic chemicals applied to these crops, and related civil liability.”

Of course, it won’t be taken seriously by Monsanto. The CEO, Hugh Grant, responded immediately. The upshot of his comments was redirection from the issues raised by Adam to the new panacea being promulgated by Monsanto and their toadies, such as Whole Foods Market. He talked of GMO coexistence with other farming, a concept that is, on its face, absurd. There is no way to contain GMO crops. They cross pollinate with others, polluting them forever. Grant stated that “Coexistence has a long successful history in agriculture. Farmers know how to do this.” It is, of course, completely untrue. Farmers who have experienced the pollution and degradation of their crops from unwanted cross pollination with GMO crops have been spearheading the battle against them.

Here’s video of Eidinger’s statement and Grant’s response:

Afterward, Eidinger discussed what actually happened to the resolution, and other speakers who discussed concerns about Monsanto’s products. He talked about how, in spite of the extreme measures used to evade the issues, he was heartened that some of the shareholders were supportive of the resolution:

Well done and thank you, Adam!
