UK's Approved Medicinal Herbs
This is the full list of approved medicinal herbs as of May Day 2011. When stocks have sold out after May Day this year, these will be the only direct-to-consumer medicinal herbs available in the UK.
by Heidi Stevenson
26 July 2011
This list has been produced by Heidi Stevenson of Gaia Health, synthesized from the MHRA's Latest Public Assessment Reports for herbal medicines, found at www.mhra.gov.uk. Each herb is listed by brand name with its approval THR number.
It's been a couple of months since this list has been updated. It had been claimed that the rate of approvals would increase because of a large number of new applications arrived shortly before the May Day deadline. Either that wasn't the case, or the MHRA is not approving many. Only another five products have been added to the list. Only one of these five, butcher's broom in the product called Phytovein, is unique. All the others are duplicates of ones that have already been approved.
The total number of herbal products approved for direct sale to the general public in the UK is now only 98! And most of these are duplicates of others and contain ingredients that no one could possibly consider reasonable in so-called natural products.
The Cranberry Example: If you've relied on cranberry to prevent or resolve bladder infections, you are out of luck. Not a single cranberry product has made the list. If you use Milk Thistle to protect your liver—which you most assuredly should do when you take almost any pharmaceutical drug or have a liver disease—you're in a somewhat better situation. There will be one—only one— product available to you. It also contains cellulose microcrystalline, croscarmellose sodium, silica (colloidal anhydrous), titanium dioxide, sodium lauryl sulphate, and iron oxide hydrate.
