Dr. Tullio Simoncini proposes that cancer is a response to the fungal infection, candida, which is responsible for the common yeast infections women suffer, especially after taking antibiotics, and thrush, best known as a mouth infection causing a pure white coating on the tongue. He noted that tumours are nearly all white, the color of most fungus, and that candida, a common fungal infection, requires an acidic environment. From there, he concluded that cancer can be destroyed with the application of sodium bicarbonate—humble baking soda.

He claims to be able to cure most cancers by applying sodium bicarbonate to the tumour. There's a clear logic that says this may be true. If diagnosed with cancer, the strongest treatment, application via catheter applied directly to the tumour, can be provided only by a mainstream doctor, someone who is unlikely to be willing to provide such a treatment. However, Dr. Simoncini and others believe that sodium bicarbonate taken orally can also help treat cancer.
Mainstream medicine and Big Pharma, which are dependent on expensive drugs and treatments, have little interest in finding out if a fungus is the cause of cancer and if baking soda can treat it. At this point, only those who apply the treatment know for sure. Of course, funding for such research is in very short supply, so researchers aren't rushing to do studies—not that medical journals would rush to publish articles about it. Therefore, it's up to the alternative treatment world to try to determine whether it makes sense.
The logic is clear. Candida is a common infection that can easily become systemic. It thrives in an acidic environment and quickly dies in an alkaline one. Dr. Simoncini, among others, has noted that candida is nearly always found in conjunction with cancer. Medical research has documented that the immediate environment of tumours is acidic. Dr. Simoncini, who is an oncologist, reasoned that a tumour is the body's attempt to sequester and remove candida infections.
He pictures it like this: Candida spreads throughout the body, with particular focus on connective tissues in organs. The body responds by attempting to sequester the fungus, especially when it invades critical spaces deep inside organs. The fungus spreads—metastasizes—and new tumours develop as the body continues to respond to the invasion. The more this happens, the more the affected person becomes weak and exhausted. Eventually, the result is severe debilitation and death by "cancer".
Antifungal drugs are not a solution. Their effectiveness has always been limited, but worse, even that is being lost to drug-resistant fungus. Clearly, another solution needs to be found. Fortunately, in terms of prevention, there are excellent techniques.
There are two major factors in preventing fungal infections, and both have to do with diet. One is that candida eats sugar. The other is the acid-base balance in the body. The solution to both is the same: avoid sugars and grains.
Pure sugar does not need to be digested. It surges into the bloodstream, resulting in excess that must be removed as rapidly as possible. Though sweet, fruit is not generally a significant concern in this regard, because their sugar is tightly bound, resulting in fairly long digestion time and slow release into the blood stream, allowing the body to manage it easily
Grains, though, are mostly carbohydrates. Carbs are rapidly converted to sugar, and that sugar is then rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, resulting in almost the same problems that diets high in sugar cause, including providing nutrition for fungus. Note that this includes whole grains. While it's true that whole grains are better than processed ones, the reality is that they should still be a very small proportion of the diet.
The acid-base balance in the body is critical in preventing fungal infections. A tiny variation from normal blood pH can rapidly lead to death. Even tenths of a percent too low (into the acid range) results in a dramatic loss of ability to carry oxygen. The common fungus, candida, requires an acidic environment. Clearly, it's critical for people to maintain a balanced pH. The solution is eating the right diet, but eating things with high pH is not the answer.
Note: The acid balance discussed here has nothing to do with the acid in your stomach. Don't think that lowering stomach acid will help. It can, in fact, make the condition worse by reducing absorption of nutrients. The acid balance of concern involves your cells and blood.
The issue in the acid-base balance is related to elements in foods, especially potassium, that produce hydrogen ions in the process of cell metabolism. Thus, although lemons are very acidic, in terms of the body's acid-base balance, they are among the very best foods for reducing acid. In general, fruits and vegetables reduce acid, while meats and grains increase it.
Modern western diets are virtually guaranteed to create an acidic body environment. Even those people who try to eat a healthy diet by following the USDA's Food Pyramid guidance, with its emphasis on grains, aren't helping themselves. It's no wonder that fungal infections are so common. A big part of the cause is high sugar and grain levels. Candida requires sugar and an acidic environmentsto survive, and both are abundent in western diets.
The jury is still out on this, and will likely remain so until mainstream medicine is wrested away from pharmaceuticals, or mainstream medicine is sidelined. However, there is good evidence that points to Dr. Simoncini's claims.
Though it isn't definitively documented, there seems to be no good reason not to try sodium bicarbonate to treat cancer. There is little to lose—a couple of bucks or quid—and everything to gain. It doesn't require stopping any other treatments.
It must be noted that a regular regimen of sodium bicarbonate is ill-advised. Though this article has focused on the risks of low pH, overly high pH is also dangerous. Also, as noted earlier, reducing stomach acid, which taking sodium bicarbonate orally will do, may be harmful to digestion. Therefore, one should never routinely take sodium bicarbonate.
First, before considering taking sodium bicarbonate, it is critical that you have a high acid balance in your body. The only situation addressed by this article is cancer, in which an overly acidic system is presumed.
The method recommended by Marcus Sircus, Ac OMD(3), is to take 1/2 teaspoon in a small (about 4 ounce) glass of water every 2 hours, up to 7 hours per day, every day, for no more than 2 weeks.
There is no way around the fact that baking soda doesn't taste good. So, is there anything that can combine with it to make it more palatable? Fortunately, the answer is yes, and with a plus. It can be taken with blackstrap molasses, which not only makes it more tasty, it also adds nutritional value and increases the anti-cancer action of sodium bicarbonate.
A major component of blackstrap molasses is sugar. It's also what candida gobbles. Taking in a bolus of sugar at the same time as baking soda is like opening the gates to the cancer/fungus. As the candida grabs sugar from the bloodstream, it's also taking in a nice big gulps of higher pH. To combine blackstrap molasses with baking soda, be sure to measure the amount of baking soda so that the correct amount is taken. Mix them together and heat gently for at least 5 minutes. They won't combine well, so it's necessary to restir (but not reheat) before each dose. (You may mix in the amount of blackstrap molasses you wish.)
Dr. Simoncini has a somewhat different approach to taking sodium bicarbonate(4). His advice is to take somewhat less for a bit longer. He suggests taking 2 teaspoons a day—and no more—for 1 week. Then, take no more than 1 teaspoons a day for no more than 2 weeks.
If you try the sodium bicarbonate cancer cure, you need to be aware that cancer didn't set in by pure chance. Your mind and body provided the soil in which it grew. If you want to continue to avoid cancer and other illnesses, you must heal its cause. See The Best Tips for Avoiding Cancer for more on how to do that.
It needs to be made absolutely clear that bicarbonate of soda is not a sure-fire cancer treatment. There are many variations on the theme of cancer. At this time, with the sad lack of good research resulting from the focus on pharmaceuticals, it is difficult to be sure of any particular treatment. The fungal genesis of cancer and its corollary sodium bicarbonate treatment must be considered tentative. On the other hand, there is little risk in trying the therapy and a great deal to gain.
So, should you or a friend or loved one decide to try sodium bicarbonate, do so with your eyes open and the realization that, if it works, you must then focus on a full return to health.
